Allan Nation - The Stockman Grass Farmer

Happy 65th birthday to The Stockman Grass Farmer – the quarterly newspaper edited and published by grazing guru Allan Nation out of Ridgeland, Mississippi in the USA.

Allan also has several books to his name including:

Quality Pasture – how to create it, manage it and profit from it,
Grassfed to Finish – a production guide to Gourmet Grass-Finished Beef,
Paddock Shift – Changing views on Grassland Farming

He also runs The Graziers Production School for US cattle farmers looking for a low-cost approach to quality beef production based on pasture rather than feedlots and cereals.

While some of the detail may not be relevant to farmers outside the US – the wise words and focus on canny business management and profit generation have meaning for cattle producers worldwide. A major editorial emphasis is the need to structure grassland farms so that they make money ten years in ten.

Father of pasture-based farming?
Allan’s editorial or ‘Observations’ as he calls them – are always worth a read. This month he tells how he discovered that George Washington, the founding father of America – was also a pioneer of grass-based agriculture.

Having become disillusioned by the soil destroying nature of tobacco farming – he became convinced that a truly sustainable agriculture had to have pasture at its heart. He experimented with rotations and organic fertilisers and high density grazing – earning the reputation of ‘lunatic’ farmer.

Allan asks whether this sounds familiar? He writes: ‘Even if you conquer the greatest empire on earth and serve two terms as President you are a lunatic if you try anything different in farming!’
